Choosing a Mattress

When choosing a memory foam mattress there are two main decisions to make:

  • Which Mattress Brand Do You Choose?
  • Do You Choose a Pure Memory Foam Mattress or One That Also Has Pocket Springs?

Let’s take a look at each of these decisions in turn…

Choosing a Mattress Brand

Memory foam mattresses tend to be a little more expensive than ordinary spring mattresses and because of this many of the luxury brands make them. However, you can still find yourself a good deal if you know the individual brands and what they are good at:

Leading Brands:

  • Sealy Mattresses – the number 1 brand in the world, Sealy are to mattresses what Coke is to soft drinks. Their Millionaire Memory mattress is their leading memory foam mattress.
  • Silentnight Mattresses – a small brand on the worldwide stage but second to Sealy in the UK. Popular models include the Memory Sleep and Memory Comfort mattresses.

Luxury Brands:

  • Relyon Mattresses – Relyon produce high quality mattresses which tend to have a combination of memory foam and pocket springs. They aren’t cheap but you will be getting a top mattress. Their leading model is the Memory Revolution 1250 mattress.
  • Rest Assured Mattresses – usually considered a premium brand, you can pick up a Rest Assured mattress at a lower price than with Relyon, but the mattresses aren’t quite of such a high quality, although they are still very good. The Restapocket 1400 Memory mattress is the one to take a look at here.

Discount Brands:

  • Myers Mattresses – although they do produce higher-end mattresses we would still consider Myers as predominately a discount brand. The Double Memory Deluxe mattress is their bestseller, although this is one of their most expensive mattresses.
  • Snuggle Mattresses – without doubt the cheapest UK brand, with Snuggle you can pick up some extremely cheap mattresses. The Memory Deluxe and Memory Coolmax mattresses are the two worth looking at.

Choosing The Type of Memory Foam Mattress

Relyon Memory Revolution 1250 MattressWhen purchase a memory foam mattress you have two options – choosing either a 100% foam mattress or choosing one which also contains pocket springs.

Relyon, mentioned above, are the leading manufacturer of memory foam mattresses which contain pocket springs. Their leading mattress, the Memory Revolution model, contains 1,250 individual pocket springs as well as a thick layer of memory foam.

In general the advantages of a foam mattress containing pocket springs are:

  • The mattress is able to breathe better as the springs allow air to reach the inside of the mattress.
  • Memory foam can make you very hot during the night. Pocket springs help to prevent this.

However, there are disadvantages:

  • Mattresses that contain springs tend to need replacing sooner, usually within 7 years whereas a top memory foam mattress can last up to 20 years.
  • The springs mean that the mattress is heavier and may also require flipping which can be very inconvenient for some people.

Most manufacturers, with the exception of Relyon, tend to produce either pure memory foam or pocket spring mattresses. We’d recommend a pure memory foam mattress unless you have the budget to afford one of Relyon’s luxury mattresses.
